The Abbeyfield Society was started in London by Richard Carr-Gomm -a returned serviceman –  who wanted to help the  poor.  His observations lead him to recognize how lonely these people were – so he changed his approach and the first Abbeyfield  House was established.  You can see a short video about the founder of Abbeyfield in the UK
